David Lindley
Playing real good - bootleg Vol. #1
David Lindley has written music history.
From founding the very first world-music-group »Kaleidoscope« in 1967 via being the guitarist, fiddle player and bandleader for Jackson Browne in the 70s, where Lindley lent his ear-piercing falsetto vocal to Jacksons biggest hit »Stay (just a little bit longer)« to his long-time cooperation with best friend and partner Ry Cooder who still mentions Lindley as »worlds best slide player«, David Lindley has worn many musical hats.
After being with different bands and playing numerous sessions for a long time he decided to form his own band »El-Rayo-X« in 1981. Their self-titled debut included a surprise hit single »She Took Off My Romeos« which was followed by »Mercury Blues«. This album established Lindley as the creative and wacky frontman whose musical vision might lead to unknown regions. Audiences were willing to go along and have remained so, allowing Lindley to record and tour at will.
Lindley spent much of his latest time playing with different ethnic groups and recorded albums with Norwegian and Malegassian folk musicians in their respective home countries.
After disbanding »El-Rayo-X« in 1987 he played with different percussionists both live and in the studio. The first one, Hani Naser, a star of his own in Jordania gave Davids musical visions a new horizon. They hit it off from a first session in Lindleys livingroom, toured the world numerous times and recorded two albums, »Playing Real Good, Live In Tokyo« and »Playing Even Better, Live All Over The Place«, both of which received highest critic and public acclaim. Lindley released these albums on his own label, »Pleemhead Audio« and sold 15.000 copies each through mail order and off the stage. He was never to work with a major record label again but then changed his mind and founded the European label »ulfTone music« in 1998.
Hani Naser moved on to other projects and Lindley found a new drummer in Wally Ingram, talent extraordinaire who formerly worked with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman, Blues Traveller and Jackson Browne.
David and Wally went into the studio immediately to cut their latest release »Twango-Bango-Deluxe«. The album shows many a side of their opulent musical catalogue and features burning renditions of Lindley classics along with new tracks such as »Cat Food Sandwiches«.
They toured Europe from April through June 1998 and after that went on the road in the US and Canada after playing a hugely succesful tour with Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin and Bruce Hornsby in the Summer of ´99 that commenced in a huge New Years Eve-bash at Staples Center in Los Angeles, opening for The Eagles.
Lindley has released a selection of never-before-heard recordings from his legendary band »El-Rayo-X« and will release a new studio album before the end of this year.
