this temple is haunted
Even in the music world, sometimes everything falls automatically into place, without calculation. Some people speak then of fate, others look for reasons. If the result speaks in such a way as in the case of the American singer/guitarist David Judson Clemmons and his new band The Fullbliss, reasons become irrelevent. The inspired fragility of a Jeff Buckley or Brian Molko, the, surreal lights of Sigur Rós, the Psychedelic edge found in early Motorpsycho, or the substance of Madrugada become one in "This Temple Is Haunted".
I hear the clock constantly tick in the background, and in the time that remains I want to create something special", says Clemmons. So to bring this thought to life the choice was made to make a recording in Berlins K4 studios. Initially the concept was more of a project recording, including London born drummer James Schmidt and Clemmons himself. Bjoern Werra actually coming from Germany stepped into the studio on the second day, only to loan his basses and have a quick listen, and a few moments later was tracking Laugh & Dance with Clemmons and Schmidt. I had seen a solo show from David the night before, and was blown away. One week later we sat together with a completed record, exhausted, but totally thrilled.
A deep, emotional and colorful energy threads the albums ten tracks together, produced by Stephan Linde in only eight days. At times rough and straight-forward, then delicately threatening, then nearly suicidal. An energy one can hardly break away from. "This Temple Is Haunted" offers violin-heavy, accessable depth, all the way to the massive rock-hyme "Laugh & Dance", which rips you from your chair. Actually I wanted to make a joke of the HipHop MC's and their superficialness", laughed Clemmons. It began to sound so convincing, I asked myself why I should only write dark and serious songs all of my life? He does it nevertheless. The fury of "See the end" balances on the basis of love on the edge, the multi-layered pain-filled complaints of "This Morning" are accented by the subtle violin arrangements of Anne de Wolff, as well as the crystal voice of Martina Kruse. The semi-acoustic creeper "Dry River" winds into a furious finale. Probably the most impressive "Random" brings all the musical ends of the trio together. "Ill see light, I'll see dark/I'll see you fall apart/I'll see tires roll/until you fill your holes/I'm in too deep", finds Clemmons delivering groove and charmful melodies, as the water runs down your back, to resist is useless. This album aspirates you. The last tones of the glowing hope of "Begin" hardly offer closure, You want more. Whether fate, coincidence or something else, we leave it with Clemmons: "Fuckin' awesome, man. Fuckin' awesome!"
