The Possibilities
way out

The Possibilities' trademark Southern-fried pop is now fully informed with the resurrection of sixties psychedelia and seventies AM radio, there's more Wings and Sweet and Outrageous Cherry in their sound now, more of Phil Spector's "wall of sound". As the occasional backing band for Americana strongman Jack Logan, and songwriters for the Minus 5 (Scott McCaughey, Ken Stringfellow and REM's Peter Buck) song "You Don't Mean It" (released as a single and performed by McCaughey on Conan O'Brien), The Possibilities have long bubbled under the surface in the realm of post-Tupelo alt-country. On 'Way Out' they evoke a confident, melancholy but at the same time joyous mood, songs that move like welcome summer afternoon storms across your consciousness...

"We worked on the record in a great Athens GA studio, Full Moon, and in our home studio, PDM, for just under 2 years. During the recording of Way Out, we also recorded Monkey Paw with Jack Logan, so we stayed pretty busy during that time. Also during that period, we got some cool news that our friend Scott McCaughey and his constantly morphing band The Minus 5 decided to record our song You Don't Mean It, release it as a single and perform it on The Conan O'Brian Show. Not too long after that, we performed as The Minus 5, with Scott, Ken Stringfellow and Peter Buck here in Athens opening for guess who- REM. It was their first electric show in town in 10 years.

Way Out is a very textured album, we tried to experiment with all kinds of sounds and make a record that you can listen to over and over picking out new things each time. We rotated our vintage guitars with a variety of vintage amps and tube mikes. Our keyboard player uses all kinds of interesting instruments (a Wurlitzer, Farfisa and Hammond organs, a Mellotron, etc) and makes each one distinct with tube amps, distortion, fuzz and classic echo. All five of us sing throughout the whole record, most of the songs have different combinations of lead vocalists with everybody else filling out the background harmonies. We've tried to show respect to all of our influences with Way Out, while at the same time trying to create new styles and sounds."

"Way Out, sounds nothing like the Ramones, The Drive By Truckers or Uncle Tupelo. It’s closest kin just might be the progressive pop of The Minus 5 and it definitely showcases the versatility needed to hang with Logan’s genre-hopping compositions. Now and Then You Appear sports the Brian Wilson-redux good vibes of Beulah, while Braintree could be a Chris Stamey-penned and sung dB’s."

"This Athens, Ga., quintet frolics in classic influences without sounding antique. Working in a Spector haze, all five Possibilities share vocals, harmonizing pristinely while dazzling keyboards by Jason Gonzalez dictate the mood. Fresh old sounds? When you're versatile enough to recall Pavement and reverent enough to cover Del Shannon, it's possible."

"
The Flaming Lips meet Brian Wilson and the Mamas and the Papas? Retro-psych masters the Possibilities do all this and more on their second album, trumping regular employer Jack Logan and all other Athens, Ga., bands for sheer exuberance and songwriting talent… You get the feeling that even if they removed the '60s/ '70s reference points, their sing-along anthems would stand firm… Whatever, it is hard to resist the rainy day wall of vocals in "Invisible," the Merseyside primitiveness of "Everywhere I Look" or the "Louie Louie" garage rock of "Coming in Waves"
Tower Records Pulse! Magazine By Ken Micallef

"
Opening with the densely layered, Phil Spector meets Beach Boys choral pop of 'Invisible', The Possibilities second album Way Out gets off to a bold start. There may be plenty of bands out there seeking their inspiration from any number of 60's and 70's influences, but The Possibilities definitely have an edge over the majority of the competition."
